Keeping Motorists in Hershey Park Happy

Where
Hershey, Pennsylvania - The intersection of Hershey Park Drive and PA Route 743

Challenge
Provide emergency traffic control at a busy multi-lane intersection until parts arrive to repair a damaged control box.

When
Saturday June 21st to Tuesday June 24th 2003.

Background
Hershey Township police needed to provide traffic control for a multi lane intersection after an accident damaged the control box. Replacement parts would not arrive for two business days. Because of the heavy traffic (ADT over 11,000) volume, 4 auxiliary policemen were necessary to manually control traffic through the intersection. Emergency response equipment had to remain on scene to warn motorists of the non-functioning signal.

Solution
Horizon Signal Technologies' SQ3TS solved the problem for Hershey Township. No other portable traffic signal is capable of handling an intersection with 4 lanes of traffic in one phase.

The Harrisburg office of Protection Services Inc. (PSI) set up six (6) SQ3TS signals to control the intersection. In little more than 6 hours after receiving the call, PSI had the intersection functioning and all emergency personnel were on their way home.

Using the quartz-timing feature the system was programmed for 2 phases of traffic using 6 lights. 4 lights controlled traffic on the main phase while the phase with less traffic was controlled using 2 lights.

Protection Services Inc. (PSI), an authorized distributor of Horizon products, is an industry leader in providing safe, dependable Work Zone Traffic Control Equipment to construction contractors and government agencies. PSI is the recent recipient of the Governor's Energy Award for "Outstanding Contributions to Pennsylvania's Energy Security."
